Site Activity Overview

The California Department of Toxic Substances Control California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is overseeing a comprehensive environmental investigation, monitoring and cleanup program of chemical (non-radioactive) contamination at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL).

Areas I, II, III and IV: The SSFL site, divided into four administrative "areas," is owned by Boeing and NASA and operated by Boeing. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) owns the buildings in Area IV in which DOE research was conducted. Investigation and cleanup efforts are coordinated between Boeing, DOE and NASA.

Surface Water Monitoring: The Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) is the lead agency responsible for regulating surface water discharge activities at SSFL. To learn more, please visit the RWQCB website or visit the Other Agencies page under Regulatory Oversight on this website.

Groundwater Characterization and Cleanup: This program consists of ongoing groundwater monitoring of existing wells, sampling of new groundwater locations, and treatment of contaminated groundwater when needed. To Learn More...

Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Facility Investigation: A RCRA Facility Investigation (RFI) is a series of investigations and studies that is the subsequent step in the corrective action process following a RCRA Facility Assessment. The RFI is conducted to identify the types and extent of chemicals of concern at the site and to determine cleanup criteria, which will be documented in a RCRA Facility Investigation Report (RFI Report). Ten RFI Reports will be prepared to address all areas of chemical contamination identified at SSFL. The RFI Reports also provide a basis for the Corrective Measures Study, which will evaluate the alternatives for remediating any identified soil or groundwater problems. To Learn More...

Interim Measures: An Interim Measure is a cleanup action taken to
protect public health and the environment while long-term solutions are being developed. An Interim Measure may be conducted anytime during a remediation program. Several Interim Measures have been conducted at the SSFL Site.

Radiation Cleanup: Cleanup of radiological contamination by the U.S. Department of Energy at SSFL is ongoing. Since DTSC is not directly involved in the radiological cleanup, please visit the U.S. Department of Energy website.
